Humans

Boundless Ambition and the Will to Change

Perhaps more so than any other races, human civilization has grown over the ages. Spurred by boundless ambition, humans grew from brutal hordes to prosperous kingdoms, and proud nations stretching across both continents. Once unable to coexist with one another, humans now form cooperatives with races across the world to further common goals and fulfill the potential of their race and push others to new heights. Humans got where they are today by changing the world around them to suit them, and when that faltered, they adapted themselves to suit the world before them. Always growing, always changing, humans are among the most fallible of races, but they will never stop growing to achieve their ambitions.

The Human Hordes

Humans have always been a diverse but splintered race. Empowered by their diversity and versatility, if not for their tendency to use those differences as a wedge to drive themselves apart. Ancient human history was filled with strife and division. Unable to accepted each other, it was unsurprising that the many early kingdoms of humanity battled not just each other, but also their neighboring nations. Ancient humans met elves and dwarves and battled over land and claims. The humans earned little victory, but gained a mutual distanced respect with their neighbors on the mainland as their hordes rampaged across the continent and fought with fellows and foreigners alike.

The First Kingdoms

Upon learning the borders they could no longer push the roiling expansion and shifting of human borders rolled across the first continent until a conquering clan encountered the mainland settlements of the halfling nation and scouting expeditions from a kingdom in the north discovered the presence of the mainland gnomes at the northern extremes of the continent. Both fronts proved unmanageable, halting the advance of the various human tribes. Bottled up in every other direction, humans turned with new vigor upon themselves. The many tribes of humans consolidated, though diplomacy and sword, into mighty kingdoms. With no clear frontier to conquer and many tribe united into mighty kingdoms, many turned their ambitions inward into a great renaissance of art, invention, and even diplomacy, which brought humans to the sea and new frontiers.

The Dwarven Wars & The Slave Trade

With their reach expanded, the human kingdoms founded powerful alliances within their own people and also negotiated strong alliances with their ancient elven and dwarven neighbors. Allied with the dwarves, the humans exchanged supplies and front-line support in the dwarves’ wars against the goblinoid races to the east within the Wildlands. In return, the dwarves helped the human kingdoms capture and subjugated goblinoid slaves and provided rare ores, including extremely valuable arcanite. Both of these drove a thriving manufacturing economy within the humans realms, which was channeled into great expeditions across the sea. It was here that humans made an alarming discovery; the second continent. The prospect of a fresh new continent to explore, filled with untold new natural resources attracted explorers, merchants, prospectors, as well as those seeking new lives and opportunities. While the goblinoid slaves had no say in the matter, their labor proved integral to the settling of this new continent, and ultimately their presence shaped the direction of this new world and the path of humanity soon after the human colonies were established on the second continent.

The Second Continent & Rebellion

The discovery of the second continent shook all established knowledge of those upon the first continent, and specifically set the human kingdoms ablaze with new ambition. However, while many came to the second continent seeking opportunities, most found themselves entirely at the whims of powerful merchants and nobles funding the expeditions that brought them to the new continent. Even those who arrived by their own means quickly found themselves browbeat and bullied by land claims and and challenges from the very oppressors many of them had fled in the old world. Infuriated with the smothering of their independence and ambition in the face of such hope and opportunity the workers of the colonies took drastic measures; they struck a bargain with the imprisoned goblinoid races to earn all of them true freedom. The human rebels amassed arms and resources, teaching and preparing the orcs to overthrow their mutual oppressors and win this new world for themselves. When their plan sprung into action they found even some nobles sympathetic to their cause, unwilling to serve in a feudal system a world away and seizing this opportunity to gain freedom and preserve some modicum of power. With defectors offering support instead of opposition the seemingly unassailable noble caste was overturned and forced into retreat back to the first continent in mere days. Their arrival stirred the human kingdoms into a fervor for war.

The War of Two Worlds & The Republic of Fortuna

The rebels fortified their holdings and with the help of their goblinoid allies the humans prepared for backlash from their foster kingdoms. It was during this time that the rebels made contact with the ancient Gnomes in the north of the second continent. Informed of the location of their ancestral brethren and of the humans’ great ships, the gnomes were eager to trade and share their knowledge of the land with the humanoids of the second continent. Upon hearing of the threat of the old human kingdoms and how that threatened their reunion with their gnomish brethren the gnomes also shared their great ingenuity to help this infant nation prepare.

When the war came upon the second continent it was a bloody battle of brothers across races. The humans of the first continent brought to bear human might beside trained goblinoid shock-troopers in a staggering display of old world power and discipline. Demoralizing as this was for the newly freed goblinoids, they stood with the humans and fought against their own, However, the combination of gnomish ingenuity and human drive turned the tide of war with ingenious tactics and contraptions that gave the inferior numbers of the fledgling nation the upper hand in battle after battle, ultimately scuttling ships and supply lines until the flow of soldiers to their shores was stemmed entirely. With the battle won, the humans declared themselves a new sovereign nation and set about the arduous work of integrating their goblinoid allies, and halting their foster kingdoms’ slave trade. Together, those who chose to stay in upon the second continent dubbed their fledgling nation The Republic of Fortuna

The Myriad Nations of Cor

In the face of the great loss of their new continent and the collapse of their slave trade, the old human kingdoms once again turned inward seeking change and a new path forward. Learning from their many defeats, they saw the strength of a people unified by purpose, and not carefully wrought alliances or sovereign rule. The old ruling families of the human kingdoms established new courts and governance, portioning out their power to the people of their kingdoms and brokered not just an alliance between their kingdoms, but a permanent partnership; a unification of nations into a great new kingdom. This new amalgamation of the kingdoms become what we know today as The Myriad Nations of Cor.

Trade & Diplomacy

Since the formation of the Myriad Nations of Cor, both continents have been in fierce competition diplomatically and economically to prove themselves the superior nation. Though relations have been repaired and free trade and travel exists between the two nations. This is in no small part due to the discovery of arcanite deposits within the second continent, providing the Republic of Fortuna with resource independence from the first continent, and providing an attractive negotiation chip with the Myriad Nations of Cor, especially after halting the slave trade damaged their arrangements with the dwarves.

Both civilizations remain powerful players in trade and diplomacy across the world and even within other civilizations. It’s claimed that if not one then both human civilizations have their hand in all affairs of this world. Both seek to finish exploring the second continent and are always looking towards the next undiscovered frontier.
